About the Author Hugh Dellar is a teacher, EFL coordinator and teacher trainer at the University of Westminster. He has been teaching since 1993, predominantly in the UK but he also spent three years teaching in Jakarta, Indonesia. He is co-author of Outcomes and Innovations and the online teacher development course Teaching Lexically all written with Andrew Walkely. Subtle yet excellent, the stars do shine, a sublime limelight on the stage of Sapphic understanding. Anne Carson's book: "If Not, Winter: Fragments of Sappho," is my introduction to the story of early Greek poetry, I am enjoying it as I continue to read. Working with fragments cannot be easy, but to translate it without being tempted to reinterpret it makes my trust in Ms. Carson's ability important. I trust her very much. As a poet, she has an ear on the lyrical, the music of the original must be influential. I do not speak Greek, so I cannot write from a "full" perspective, only to say I am glad to have her book in my library.2/26/15 Additional commentary: How well written, and the genius of the personal, I read online and at the encyclopedia (Wiki) that Sappho was a master of personal poetry, that she connected to individuals as opposed to groups, like a poet to an individual reader... How important it truly is that one need not be a reader of Greek language to appreciate the subtle genius of Sappho and Ms. Carson in the briefest of fragments. For example, fragment 176, page 349, the fragment reads: "lyre, lyre, lyre". The Greek reads three words, similar, yet spelt subtly different, almost as if "lyre, liar, lier" We don't know, but Ms. Carson understands. A good mystery piques our interest!Allen Hagar

I was introduced to Sappho in a World Literature class at my university. I was immediately fascinated with her and wanted to read more of her work. I researched for quite a while and decided this was the translation I wanted and I have not been disappointed. I re-examine this piece of work every few months. Much of Sappho is fragments because a lot of the work has been ruined but what is left, is beautiful and this translation does it justice. I would highly recommend!

Anne Carson is not only a Greek scholar, she is also a poet in her own right. Thus she is perfectly (if not uniquely) suited to prepare a translation of Sappho for the modern reader.Her text is serious enough -- it includes the original Greek text on facing pages. There is also an extensive appendix with the standard academic footnotes, glosses, and helpful, if erudite, commentary. However, because the questions and difficulties of translation and text and vocabulary are tucked safely away in the appendix, the reader can focus complete attention on the poetry at hand.Dr. Carson produces a careful, line by line, translation of the text. Yet, rather than simply another dusty exercise in classical scholarship, her own poetic translation leaves the reader aching with the haunting echoes of Sappho's heart cry across the intervening centuries.

Sadly, much of Sappho's work is lost to the ages. Fortunately, Anne Carson has translated what survives in a wonderful, comprehensive collection. All of Sappho's extant works are here in a dual-language book - the original Greek on one page, Carson's translations on the other. Having read several translations (I do not read Greek), Carson's is my favorite - the images are immeadiate, the sense of urgency and romance clearly communicated in lyric prose. Some apparently are frustrated by the equal attention Carson gives to each fragment - remnants of poems (even a single word) are given their own page just as longer bits. I enjoyed this, wondering what has been lost, haunted by a voice over 2,000 years old, marveling at the beauty of what remains. If you, like me, are a lover of poetry, I highly recommend this collection above all other translations.

Truly stunning poetry and translation. So heartfelt and lyrical, to the point of where I was driven to purchase a lyre to sing them as they would have been sung in ancient times. Sappho makes me cry and sigh, and she'll make you do the same.

This is the best translation of Sappho's poetry that I've read so far. Anne Carson uses crisp, modern English to beautifully paint what little words remain to us of the Tenth Muse. The presentation of biographical and grammatical material from ancient sources adds rich context to her passionate fragments. Sappho is definitely my favorite poetess.

This book was a disappointment to me. I knew the poems were fragments for the most part, but I never dreamed a book could be compiled mainly of sentence fragments and brackets. I was expecting a more lyrical translation. The brackets were disruptive to any attempt at achieving a poetic mood.

About the Author

Anton Chekhov (1860-1904) first turned to writing as a medical student at Moscow University, from which he graduated in 1884. Among his early plays were short monologues (The Evils of Tobacco, 1885), one-act farces such as The Bear, The Proposal and The Wedding (1888-89) and the 'Platonov' material, adapted by Michael Frayn as Wild Honey. The first three full-length plays to be stage, Ivanov (1887), The Wood Demon (1889) and The Seagull (1896) were initially failures. But the Moscow Arts Theatre's revival of The Seagull two years later was successful and was followed by his masterpieces, Uncle Vanya (1889), Three Sisters (1901), and The Cherry Orchard in 1904, the year of his death.

He earned his doctorate in biological education from Idaho State University.
